G'day, welcome and thanks for visiting. My name is Nicole Logg (nee Care) and I'm passionate about supporting farmers fine tune their livestock nutrition to improve animal health and performance. I LOVE formulating rations and management plans to optimise efficiency and production.
My childhood was spent in a rural area near Geelong, VIC, and my interest in animal production led me to studying a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (with Honours) at The University of Melbourne. After university I spent almost 2 years living in Colorado before returning to work with a large stockfeed company in the early 2000's. I In this role I spent 9 years formulating and providing technical support for beef, sheep and equine customers.
Following this I did a stint with the' green shirts' as their southern Divisional Nutritionist before starting a family. Whilst at home with young children I completed my Master of Agriculture at UNE and was fortunate to be able to work part-time providing formulation and technical support for a local stockfeed company in the Riverina (NSW). It was here I was able to design and create specifications that are fit for purpose, with the initial idea to create a grain balancer concentrate pellet to blend with our own grain and legumes for our feedlot lambs.
Alongside my husband Rob and 2 kids, we run a mixed farming operation near Barmedman in the northern Riverina. Our sheep flock is based on the dual-purpose SAMM (South African Meat Merino) for wool and meat production. We also have Poll Hereford beef cattle and grow crops for both hay and grain production. We focus on having healthy and productive soils, plants and livestock which have an interrelated benefit on reproductive performance and growth. We are always looking to improve our efficiencies in a mixed farming operation with a focus on labour, pasture management and livestock nutrition. In my role as The Livestock Coach, I help farmers plan & manage their livestock operation. These are most often on mixed farms where there are competing demands for time and resources and typically involve aligning tasks to a customised timeline to be more efficient whilst improving production and ultimately profitability.
In late 2022, I was awarded the honour of being selected as a Nuffield Scholar for 2023. During this time, I have had the most wonderful experience visiting a huge variety of farms, from a farm growing and distilling peppermint for toothpaste in northern India, to the beautiful Rocky Mountains in Montana trailing sheep as they move to the mountains to graze summer forages. Each farm has been unique and the learnings immense, but most importantly the people are warm, welcoming and open to sharing their farming story. Farmers all around the world certainly share a wonderful connection to other farmers, and they all want to know your yearly rainfall and compare current livestock prices! If you have an idea for a study topic, I strongly encourage you to apply. The application process is simple and a great experience in itself, so give yourself the chance to become part of the worldwide Nuffield family!
